John Dawes

International Spill Accreditation Association

John Dawes attended his first oil spill in 1980 and since then has been responsible for hands-on control of over 1400 spills in both the UK and abroad. His company, OPD Ltd, was the first in the UK to have a nationwide spill response contract with several oil company majors. He helped develop the British Oil Spill Control Association (BOSCA) spill contractors’ accreditation scheme and currently is involved with a development of that scheme run by the International Spill Accreditation Association. John sits on an ISO standards committee which is currently considering worldwide standards for spill response equipment and contractors’ response to incidents.

Has the spill contractors’ accreditation scheme improved response or is it largely ignored by loss adjusters and if so, why?
